Cristiano Ronaldo left Portugal’s training camp in Copenhagen on Wednesday, hours after coach Jorge Jesus told a press conference that the captain would not start against Denmark.

Ronaldo, 41, had been due to train with the squad at the Parken stadium. He left abruptly once Jesus had finished speaking, and the Portuguese federation confirmed he did not take part in the session. A private jet was reported to have been heading to Copenhagen afterwards.

In a statement, Ronaldo said the decision to leave the camp was his own and indicated he would tell the full story later.

The context is a run of time on the bench. Ronaldo sat out the entirety of Portugal’s Nations League fixture against Norway in Oslo, where Gonçalo Ramos scored the winner. Jesus, 72, intended to start the AC Milan striker again in Copenhagen.

Jesus denied there had been any incident, saying that players left out naturally feel disappointed about reduced playing time. He did not alter his team plan.

The numbers behind the dispute are considerable. Ronaldo is Portugal’s record scorer with 146 goals in 234 appearances, and he has described the current season as probably his last in football. That combination, a career record and a closing window, makes a substitute’s role harder to accept than it might be for another player.

For Jesus the calculation runs the other way. A coach selecting for a qualifying campaign has to weigh form and fitness against reputation, and benching a player of Ronaldo’s standing is either the clearest signal of authority available or the most costly error, depending on results.

Portugal’s fixture at the Parken goes ahead without the captain, and whatever Ronaldo intends to say will land after it.
